Widow Skimmer
Libellula luctuosa

Bugs took me a while. I came for birds, and I still do, but once you look down, the widow skimmer is a serious animal to track.
Wind is the enemy. A dead-calm ten minutes can give you more images than a windy hour.
Taxonomy here follows a standard order-level frame (Odonata / Libellulidae); common synonymies are noted when I’ve seen them used in the field.
I’ve photographed this species on nectar sources in several states and a couple of regions.
As always with insects, I welcome a correction from anyone who actually knows what they’re doing.
