Painted Lady
Vanessa cardui

Bugs took me a while. I came for birds, and I still do, but once you look down, the painted lady is a serious animal to track.
At close range you’ll find the body plan is surprisingly specific, and the field marks that matter are not the ones on the wings.
I avoid published counts of population estimates here. My interest is a sightings journal, not a density map.
I’ve photographed this species on nectar sources in several states and a couple of regions.
This is a species I’d like to spend more time with, and probably will once the fall migration settles down.
