Fly Agaric

Fungi sit well outside my competence, but the fly agaric is distinctive enough that I trust my call most of the time.

Substrate is half the story: specific woods, specific stages of decay.

Taxonomy here follows a standard order-level frame (Agaricales / Amanitaceae); common synonymies are noted when I’ve seen them used in the field.

Most of my sightings are on downed logs in second-growth forest within an hour of home.

I don’t forage. Any mushroom I photograph stays where it is.
