European Honey Bee

Apis mellifera

First light in September.

Bugs took me a while. I came for birds, and I still do, but once you look down, the european honey bee is a serious animal to track.

Wind is the enemy. A dead-calm ten minutes can give you more images than a windy hour.

Taxonomy here follows a standard order-level frame (Hymenoptera / Apidae); common synonymies are noted when I’ve seen them used in the field.

I’ve started keeping track of host plants, which has forced me to learn more plants than I intended.

As always with insects, I welcome a correction from anyone who actually knows what they’re doing.
