Eastern Bluebird

The eastern bluebird doesn’t get the attention it deserves, probably because it’s too common in some places and too remote in others.

Structure is the best clue at distance: in flight the eastern bluebird has a particular proportion you start to recognize before any field mark resolves.

Regional occurrence notes: I usually catch this species in the eastern north america part of its range.

The best individual bird I’ve had was hunting in thin morning light, long enough for me to watch rather than shoot for once.

It’s a species I’d happily spend an entire morning watching without ever raising the camera.
