Chicken of the Woods

Fungi sit well outside my competence, but the chicken of the woods is distinctive enough that I trust my call most of the time.

Substrate is half the story: specific woods, specific stages of decay.

My images for this species are all made with available light. I don’t use fill flash in the field.

Most of my sightings are on downed logs in second-growth forest within an hour of home.

I don’t forage. Any mushroom I photograph stays where it is.
