California Poppy

Eschscholzia californica

California Poppy in low overcast light
An October morning at the edge of town.
California Poppy in bloom
Midwinter, low sun.

I am not a botanist and the california poppy is on this list mostly as an apology for ignoring the plants for so long.

I mostly photograph this species as part of a place, not as a portrait.

Taxonomy here follows a standard order-level frame (Ranunculales / Papaveraceae); common synonymies are noted when I’ve seen them used in the field.

The light that works for this species is overcast, softened, and not dramatic.

Plant ID is its own craft and I’m in the slow part of the learning curve.
