Black-necked Stilt

Of all the birds on this site, the black-necked stilt is the one I feel I understand best, which is a weak claim given how little I actually know.

In my experience, sex differences show up more reliably in the field than any field guide suggests; the plates always look cleaner than the bird.

Regional occurrence notes: I usually catch this species in the americas part of its range.

One winter I had a pair stay on the same river bend from November into late March and I wasn’t sick of them at the end.

I’m still bad at sexing juvenile black-necked stilts in the first year, and I suspect I always will be.
