African Elephant

Of the mammals I regularly photograph, the african elephant is the one I’m most cautious about.

Signs on the ground tell you they’re around before you ever see one.

My images for this species are all made with available light. I don’t use fill flash in the field.

Most of my shots are from a vehicle, which is still the least intrusive way I know to approach a wary mammal.

I’m learning to put the camera down earlier with mammals than I would with birds.
