Of the spots I’ve covered in this notebook, Kushiro Shitsugen is the one I most often recommend to people who ask where to go with a week and a camera.

Getting there is straightforward if you plan around the road access and the weather window for the season.

The core habitat at Kushiro Shitsugen is sedge marsh and oxbow rivers, and the best of it is concentrated in a handful of places that reward slow walking.

My default advice is to go late december through february for cranes. Outside that window there are still good days here, but the baseline quality drops.

Bring a scope e one. More of this place is at middle distances than you’d think.

The best single image I’ve made at Kushiro Shitsugen was an accident I reached for without thinking; the ones I set up for are the ones I’ve half-forgotten.

Honest assessment: Kushiro Shitsugen is good but not magic. On a bad day you’ll still have a bad day here.
