What 'pale' means in a field guide

“Pale” in a field guide is doing a lot of work. Pale compared to what? To the male of the same species? To a similar species? To your mental prototype of the genus? I’ve started cross-reading descriptions of two similar species side-by-side and asking myself which relative claim the field guide is making. It’s slower. It’s also more accurate.
