Ethics of pishing

I pish less than I used to. The argument for pishing is that it gets you a better look, and the argument against it is that you are paying the bird’s time in exchange for yours. I’ve come around to the view that for a rare or stressed bird, you shouldn’t; for a wintering flock of chickadees in a suburban woodlot, it’s fine; and for everything in between, the answer is “sparingly.” I don’t think this is a controversial position.
