Camargue flamingos and horses
Drove down from Avignon. The Camargue salt marshes hold one of Europe’s big flamingo breeding colonies and the drive along the road between Arles and Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer in June is full of stilts, avocets, and gulls. White Camargue horses at the edge of marsh at sunset is a cliché for a reason.
French road signs for birds are delightful. A ‘Réserve Ornithologique’ is a refuge, but the sign has a little illustrated flamingo on it.
